Located in the heart of Koreatown, Los Angeles, this project for a 145,000 sf development address the housing crisis facing Los Angeles by proving immediate access to affordable housing. The massing reflects the meeting of three different communities to create a combined community’ three building mass sitting a combined podium, the symbolic and structural foundation of their combination.
The two higher rising buildings provide housing, one for rent and one for sale, whilst reserving a portion of units as low income affordable units. The third building with its lower massing provides commercial space.
Central to the design concept is an idea of a unified building community and this is achieved through shared amenities and shared outdoor public spaces. A communal rooftop deck connects the for sale and for rent units whilst a communicable raised courtyard occupies the in-between spaces between the three buildings. Besides an emphasis on outdoor spaces’ the design incorporates over passive sustainability techniques with minimal western exposure, utilizing recessed balconies adjacent living rooms and channeling of the prevailing southwest winds.
