2050 Buddy is a 10-story core and shell office building in west Los Angeles. It’s unique massing is a response to the zoning code and specific plan seeing the mass cut into two at the projects center – the result being two towers over a podium mass connected by a series of joining balconies connecting each tower. The ‘scissor’ incision not only creates a central void and break in the massing but allows for increased daylight into all the office floors.
The two towers are wrapped in a that ‘envelope’ that respond to solar orientation and allowable openings by varying the amount of solid to transparent glazing. At the street facing ends, the angled facades are broken down into pairs of floors to break down the scale and crest overhangs and opportunities for additional exterior balconies.
With an emphasis on indoor-outdoor connections the interior ‘scissor’ balconies in combination with the street facing balconies ensure all floors have access to exterior balconies and outdoor amenities. Finally, a generous roof deck amenity at the west tower provides expansive views towards the ocean, city and Santa Monica mountains to the west and north-west.
